Background Experience and Entry into Online Marketing
Sam grew up in a small town in New England before moving down south. He obtained a Bachelors degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in International Studies (Global Economics, Trade and Development). During his studies Sam worked heavily in the food industry but also worked for an International Development consultancy.
Following his undergraduate studies Sam headed to the UK where he earned a Masters degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science in Public Policy and began work on a blog and online clothing store in his spare time.
With a large burden of student loans and a difficult public sector job market Sam began looking for work in the private sector and joined a brand management and media agency where he worked as an assistant planner and policy researcher for a handful of clients both in the public and private sectors.
In late 2009 Sam joined Distilled as an SEO Consultant where he learned from highly respected and experienced SEOs and adapted quickly. After a few short months of working as an SEO Consultant, Sam was given the opportunity to take on several of his own clients and was promoted to the role of Lead SEO in early 2010.
Whilst at Distilled Sam has written for a number of leading industry blogs (Econsultancy, SEOmoz, Distilled, State of Search) and has spoken at a number of SEO industry events (including SMX Advanced London, a4uexpo and Distilled’s PRO SEO Seminar). During his tenure at Distilled, Sam also worked as a Global Associate for SEOmoz answering Q&A and regularly blogging for them.
